This poor spotted eagle owl had a broken wing when he was rescued by a passer-by who saw it being taunted by a group of young boys. Unfortunately, Malawi folklore claims that owls are evil and carry messages for witches and so they tend to be badly treated. This case certainly highlights the need for more education in schools about animal welfare and the importance of keeping wildlife in the wild, but luckily we think this story will have a happy ending. After four weeks of close monitoring and veterinary care, Oliver the owl surprised the team by flying up to a tree in the aviary, even with his wing in a plaster cast! Since the cast has been removed he has been perfecting his flying and intimidating looks and the team are now researching potential release sites. We will update you with more shortly…
